Choose a theme and stick to it. There are many festive options: woodsy cottage, winter wonderland, silver and gold. Carry your chosen theme into other areas of the home too, such as fresh or faux greenery wrapped around your banister and incorporated into unconventional areas, like in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Set the mood with lighting. It contributes to the vibe in your home, which impacts the people who live in your home and visitors. Layer lighting by combining ambient, task and accent lighting that can be increased or decreased, depending on the mood of your gathering. For example, dim light is better suited to dining and intimate gathering, while brighter light is great for more casual kitchen parties. Installing a dimmer switch on your lights lets you crank it up or down as needed, so you don't have to commit to one type of light - or party!

Candles are a must at this time of year, adding a key layer to you lighting strategy, not to mention their aesthetic attributes and aroma! But be safe and never leave a candle unattended.

The holidays should be a time of fun and joy, but for many, they are also a source of stress. Take the overwhelm out of the holidays by planning ahead and being prepared. Your gatherings don't have to be overblown or overdone. Just a little thoughtful planning and preparedness will ensure that you enjoy the season just as much as your guest do!
