June 21st is the first day of summer—are you ready to celebrate? Summer begins on the solstice, the day when the Earth’s axis tilts our northern hemisphere most prominently toward the sun. (In the southern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurred on Dec. 22, 2011.) On this day, the sun will reach its highest point in the sky, and afterward, the daylight hours will grow shorter.
